Whitby youngster has taste for speed
Whitby’s Rianna O’Meara- Hunt has proved herself one of the fastest people on four wheels for her age in New Zealand.
The Adventure School 13-yearold has had a prolific karting season.
She won the Wellington club points series, took out the Wellington Provincial Karting Association championship, won the prestigious Blossom Kart Festival in Hawke’s Bay and, most recently, came third at the KartSport New Zealand North Island sprint championships.
At each event O’Meara-Hunt was the only female driver in her class, competing with and often outclassing her male peers.
Third place at the sprint championships was bitter- sweet for O’Meara-Hunt.
She was leading for most of the final until a passing manoeuvre on the last lap forced her wide and on to the grass with only four corners to go.
It was her last race in the junior restricted class and she will now step up into the junior rotax class.
‘‘ It will be a steep learning curve,’’ she said. ‘‘The new kart is bigger and heavier, with a more powerful 125cc water- cooled engine, meaning more horse power and speed. I can’t wait.’’
O’Meara-Hunt is racing through the support from sponsors such as Wilford Motorsport and Right Karts.
