Hurricanes’ early Masterton game

Tickets to January’s Super Rugby preseason game between the Hurricanes and Crusaders have gone on sale.

The Tui- sponsored game will be played on Saturday, January 31, at Eketahuna Rugby Club, north of Masterton.

The club celebrated its 125th anniversary this year and president Dennis Dougherty said there had already been a positive response from the community once the Super game was locked in.

The Hurricanes’ new recruit and fullback, Jason Woodward, can’t wait to have one of his first hitouts of the 2015 season at Eketahuna.

The 24- year-old, who has had two years playing with the Melbourne Rebels, said playing in heartland New Zealand was quite special.

‘‘I am really excited to get out and play rugby in the smaller towns, because the community support and atmosphere is just awesome,’’ he said.

January’s match is the fifth such preseason game in the area, with three being played on a field next to the Tui brewery and last year’s taking place at Memorial Park in Masterton.

Tickets cost $40 each or $130 for the corporate area.
