Petrol thief pays up

A thief with a conscience stole petrol, but returned the next day to pay for it.

Hayden Paul Rizvi pleaded guilty to stealing $ 123.40 worth of petrol when he appeared in Porirua District Court last Tuesday.

Police prosecutor Lucette Kuhn said that on October 9, Rizvi and two associates filled up their vehicle at BP Mana, but instead of paying, made off with the petrol.

The car was reported to police driving dangerously near Pukerua Bay and was eventually Raumati.

Rizvi’s lawyer, Sarah Pettett, said he showed his regret for the crime by going back to pay the next day.

‘‘ It was immediate remorse demonstrated,’’ she said.

Judge John Walker said Rizvi’s actions of returning to pay had saved him from community service.

He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentencing if called upon within six months.
