Organisers of the Porirua Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal are hoping to set a giving record.

Now in its 20th year, the appeal, which was launched last Thursday, aims to collect more than 45,000 gifts. The appeal runs until December 24.

Last year Wellington residents collectively donated an impressive 3482 gifts, easing the financial burden of Christmas for many families.

Store manager Julian Hopkins said Kmart was proud of the long-standing history of the appeal and the powerful tradition it had become.

‘‘The longevity of this appeal is testament to the Kiwi spirit of supporting each other, especially at Christmas time,’’ he said.

‘‘ We know that people are busy, so we want to make it as easy as possible to donate – be it with a gift, online or while they are going through a register.’’
