Pool wa­ter used to fight fire

Fire­fight­ers drained a nearby swimming pool to help fight a fire in Pare­mata on Satur­day.

The Pare­mata house was de­stroyed by the fire, which broke out in the home in Kahu Rd about 5pm.

Fire­fight­ers worked hard to put out the blaze, which spread into scrub and threat­ened houses be­hind.

Rachelle Stod­dart, who lives be­hind, said neigh­bours rushed to fight the fire with gar­den hoses.

As­sis­tant Wellington area com­man­der Dave Key said fire­fight­ers ar­rived at the scene to find min­i­mal mains pres­sure to fight the fire.

But a nearby back­yard had a 50,000- litre swimming pool, which was drained to bat­tle the blaze.

The cause of the fire or whether it started in the home or bush be­hind is not yet known.

Strong winds pushed the flames near homes.

No­body was in­jured and ev­ery­one out of the house when fire­fight­ers ar­rived.

Fire safety in­ves­ti­ga­tors are look­ing into the cause of the fire.
