A thoroughly British night of enjoyment
The Trust Porirua City Brass Band is performing Last Night of The Proms.
There’ll be flags, balloons and lots of traditional British songs.
The band will feature a number of talented soloists such as Nicholas Garrett, who was recently selected for the National Brass Band of New Zealand, and toured China and Korea with the band in September. Also featured are the Take Note Singers. The choral group is full of ordinary people having fun singing great songs in harmony. The choirs are dotted throughout Wellington with a group in Porirua and Tawa.
Liberty Swing Band is another popular group. It’s an 18-piece dance band modelled after the classic format of the bands of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and other bands of the Big Band era.
The Last Night of the Proms concert is traditionally in a lighter, ‘‘ winding- down’’ vein, with popular classics being followed by a series of British patriotic pieces in the second half of the concert, such as Land of Hope and Glory and Rule, Britannia!
