A thor­oughly Bri­tish night of en­joy­ment

The Trust Porirua City Brass Band is per­form­ing Last Night of The Proms.

There’ll be flags, bal­loons and lots of tra­di­tional Bri­tish songs.

The band will fea­ture a num­ber of tal­ented soloists such as Ni­cholas Gar­rett, who was re­cently se­lected for the Na­tional Brass Band of New Zealand, and toured China and Korea with the band in Septem­ber. Also fea­tured are the Take Note Singers. The choral group is full of or­di­nary peo­ple hav­ing fun singing great songs in har­mony. The choirs are dot­ted through­out Wellington with a group in Porirua and Tawa.

Lib­erty Swing Band is another popular group. It’s an 18-piece dance band mod­elled after the clas­sic for­mat of the bands of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Elling­ton and other bands of the Big Band era.

The Last Night of the Proms con­cert is tra­di­tion­ally in a lighter, ‘‘ wind­ing- down’’ vein, with popular clas­sics be­ing fol­lowed by a se­ries of Bri­tish pa­tri­otic pieces in the sec­ond half of the con­cert, such as Land of Hope and Glory and Rule, Bri­tan­nia!
