Big day for hockey youngsters

Kapi-Mana News - - SPORT -

Last Monday Pukerua Bay School children tested out their new-found hockey skills, as they wrapped up their ActivePost Small Sticks programme with a festival day.

Nearly 180 children played in the round-robin tournaments.

Helping out was newly chosen Black Sticks defender, Dane Lett, who will debut in the upcoming four-test series against Japan in Wellington and Kapiti.

It was the first year the ActivePost in-school hockey programme was run at Pukerua Bay by Wellington Hockey. Com- munity hockey officer for Wellington Hockey, Dan Grant, said it had been a success.

‘‘We’re hoping the kids will keep playing and join their local hockey club next year,’’ he said.

Fun Sticks teaches children aged 4 to 6 the fundamental skills needed for any sport – ball skills, co-ordination, body position, player and space awareness.

Children then progress through the remaining stages, which finish with Kwik Sticks - where 12 and 13-year-olds can participate in full 11- a- side hockey matches.

Good save: Ollie Gittens makes a run.
