Petranoff Smith completed the impossible on November 15 – he walked five kilometres.

A year ago, Smith couldn’t even walk to his mailbox.

His 100-kilogram weight-loss story garnered national attention after being published in KapiMana News in September.

Smith and 80 supporters took to Porirua’s streets to honour his brother, who died from cancer last year.

‘‘I thought there wouldn’t be much of a turnout due to the weather, but the sun shone and I was amazed and overwhelmed by the support,’’ he said.

‘‘It was one hell of a walk, but I can now tick that off my bucket wish list. ‘‘ Now I look forward to concentrating on a rugby comeback game next season.’’

Smith said he wanted to thank all the people who walked and supported him, including family from Samoa, New York and Australia.

More than $280 was raised for the Child Cancer Foundation and Mary Potter Hospice, with more still coming through.

Finish line: Petranoff Smith completed his five-kilometre walk on Saturday.
