Waka relaunch a big success
Te Kura Maori o Porirua’s waka proved its seaworthiness off Titahi Bay on November 7.
The waka is called Te Huka-atai, the name of Kupe’s anchor taken back to Hawaiki.
It has been restored by students at the kura since term 1, under the tutelage of Hinga Smith.
It set sail towards Mana Island just after 7am on November 7.
The conditions were cold and clear, with light winds, Smith said.
About 50 people watched the launch after it was blessed by Ngati Toa.
‘‘Although the tide was low, the waka was able to sail out to sea just fine,’’ Smith said.
‘‘It sat quite high in the water and at times we were able to catch full winds.’’
