Waka re­launch a big suc­cess

Te Kura Maori o Porirua’s waka proved its sea­wor­thi­ness off Ti­tahi Bay on Novem­ber 7.

The waka is called Te Huka-atai, the name of Kupe’s an­chor taken back to Hawaiki.

It has been re­stored by stu­dents at the kura since term 1, under the tute­lage of Hinga Smith.

It set sail to­wards Mana Is­land just af­ter 7am on Novem­ber 7.

The con­di­tions were cold and clear, with light winds, Smith said.

About 50 peo­ple watched the launch af­ter it was blessed by Ngati Toa.

‘‘Although the tide was low, the waka was able to sail out to sea just fine,’’ Smith said.

‘‘It sat quite high in the wa­ter and at times we were able to catch full winds.’’
