Housing NZ shameful

Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION -

Can the general manager of Housing New Zealand property service really claim that there is a low demand for housing in Porirua?

Why then is more than one family living in some houses? Some of them I know are sleeping in the garage of a home.

There may be a demand for onebedroom homes in Wellington, but not everyone wants to live in Wellington.

Two couples I know want to live in this city and are looking for homes.

Would they go to Hazard Grove or other areas of Porirua East? The answer is no because Housing New Zealand has let it deteriorate to such a state that it is depressing to even drive through.

I have been to Hazard Grove many times and it now attracts the party people and crime.

A lot of the houses there are boarded up and have been stripped of hot water cylinders, stoves and any fixtures.

Years ago an inspector would go to each house and we got a rent reduction for keeping the outside and inside in good condition.

People in our street took pride in their homes so rent wouldn’t increase.

Also, when you rang to report something not working or windows jammed etc, somebody would be round to fix it (you wait months now).

I feel sorry for the Huntleys (November 11) trying to keep their home nice when in the winter cold comes in the windows and mould grows on walls. And they have the anxiety of not knowing when they may have to leave.

Having spoken to [Mana MP] Kris Faafoi when he addressed a meeting I attended, I was told that Housing New Zealand would be starting work on these houses on August 14.

Shame on you, Housing New Zealand.

You are doing nothing to help the people of Porirua.
