Capital & Coast District Health Board is encouraging people with minor injuries and illnesses to seek medical help from their GP or call HealthLine.

Wellington and Kenepuru hospitals are operating near full capacity and chief operating officer Chris Lowry said as a result people could expect longer waiting times in the emergency department.

Lowry said there was no obvious trend for the higher numbers, because patients of all ages were arriving with various injuries and illnesses.

The hospital was still providing a very high quality of service, she said, and had rostered on extra staff to deal with the higher number of patients.

Lowry thanked the public for their understanding and patience.

However, she urged the public to leave the hospital’s emergency department for emergencies.

Unless it is an emergency, the hospital asks people to please first make contact with their GP or call HealthLine on 0800 611 116.
