Canopies removal timeline

The dismantling of Porirua’s Canopies starts this weekend and is likely to take up to four weeks.

A Porirua City Council spokeswoman said contractors were on track to begin on Sunday.

The work will take place between 6pm and 6am, but not on Friday and Saturday nights, and she said there would be little disruption to people moving through the area.

The coverings, put up in 1995, are being removed for safety reasons, after an engineer’s report noted that the fabric could rip in high winds.

The council agreed in August to take the fabric down but retain all the supporting columns, cables and ground anchors.

A replacement canopy will be designed so that the council can consider cost, durability and fabric types.

It will mean no cover in the city centre for most of this year, however.

Whether to erect new Canopies will be considered as part of the council’s long-term plan, the draft for which will be finalised in March.
