When big Phil came to town

Darts legend Phil ‘‘ The Power’’ Taylor wowed the crowds at Te Rauparaha Arena on Thursday evening.

The rotund Englishman, a 16-time world champion, turned up with double world champion, Adrian ‘‘Jackpot’’ Lewis, and other big names. They were touring New Zealand as part of the DartsKing Australasia series.

Taylor, 53, didn’t disappoint. He outclassed Upper Hutt builder Rob Szabo 14-1, showing the colour and precision that has made him such a favourite at the home of darts, Alexandra Palace, otherwise known as ‘‘Ally Pally’’.

Wellingtonians were lucky to see Taylor, who rushed home after his Thursday appearance to be with his gravely ill mother. The Friday evening session was all the poorer for his absence.

The crowd loved the darts, dressing up, cheering wildly and imbibing freely. Taylor’s appearance marked a special night for Porirua sport, one not soon forgotten.
