Help us to solve Whitby mystery

Search under way for lucky competition winner

Kapi-Mana News - - FLASHBACK - By KRIS DANDO

It’s a Flashback with a difference this week and we have Pataka’s social history curator Alice Masters to thank.

She is collecting material for exhibitions to celebrate Porirua’s 50th birthday and has unearthed a gem – and we’re keen to find out more.

The 2ZB (now Newstalk ZB) radio station ran the ‘‘$16,000 Landmark Competition’’ in 1979, giving away a section in Mercury Way, Whitby.

It was also a chance for the Community Developments Consortium to give the new suburb a push.

The competition asked Whitby-related questions and entrants had to sketch how they would place a home on the section.

We want to track down who won the prize. What’s the exact address of the property? Was the section built on immediately? Is the family or individual who won still living there?

Email edi if you can help.
