St Pius X School has made the best of a bad situation.

The school was tagged last year, but Richard WithefordSmith from Porirua City Council’s anti-graffiti team came to the rescue, offering to help the students paint a mural as part of the Tag Free Kiwi programme. Artists Rachel Benefield and Emily Boonan worked with the senior students, who designed and painted the murals based on the school’s Waka ( Whanau– Atua- KuraAroha) vision. Principal Jane Reddish said the students were proud of their work. ‘‘ We have worked really hard to create an attractive school environment at Saint Pius X,’’ she said.

‘‘It can be disheartening when tagging occurs, because it is costly and time-consuming to combat its negative effects.

‘‘We are very grateful to Richard, Rachel and Emily for their enthusiasm and assistance.’’
