If the excitement of the St Theresa’s school children is anything to go by, the school’s annual carnival will be a big hit on Saturday.

St Theresa’s principal Zita Smith said the event was a fixture of the Plimmerton community and had been running since before she arrived at the school 12 years ago.

‘‘It’s a bit of an institution and it’s something that every family helps out with,’’ she said. ‘‘We have a historical reputation.’’ Smith said they hoped to raise $25,000, which would cover the final instalment of what the school needed to build a new learning hub.

‘‘It will take us over the line, which is very exciting.’’

There will be games, homemade sweets, jams and pickles and bargain sales, while Zappo the Magician and Wellington’s own Iron Man are set for an appearance.

There are big prizes up for grabs in raffles, including an iPad and a trip to Auckland worth $1000.

The St Theresa’s Carnival is on at the school on Saturday, March 14, 11am till 3pm.
