Lions help orchestra
Titahi Bay Lions have some fans in the Virtuoso Strings Orchestra.
On February 28, the Lions, who run the Porirua Market, donated $1000 to the orchestra, which gives free music lessons to decile 1 schools in Porirua.
Lions members then cleared their throats and helped the orchestra with a spot of busking on a busy Saturday morning.
The $ 1000 will go towards equipment such as music stands.
Orchestra director Liz Sneyd said any donation was most welcome.
‘‘If there were only 20 children in the programme, funding would not be an issue, but the large numbers have stretched the resources, so the sponsorship by the Lions is greatly appreciated,’’ she said.
Lions club treasurer John Linschoten said the money was generated from the market.
Orchestra members were often in the CBD on Saturdays busking, which was how they came to the attention of the Lions, he said.
