Shedding light on tragedy

Passengers departing Wellington’s Queens Wharf and Petone Wharf on the East by West Ferry to Matiu Somes Island and Days Bay on Saturday will become part of a new artwork by Wellington artist Mike Ting.

Four scheduled sailings – three of them free – will ferry passengers past Matiu Somes and the lessknown Mokopuna Island, site of the final months and tragic death of a sick man placed there by local authorities in 1904.

Half a mile out a warning horn will sound, announcing the start of the 10-minute performance event at the heart of the project.

Ting is exploring themes of isolation, vulnerability and social responsibility in New Zealand’s post1980s socio-political context.

Mokopuna sailings will leave Queens Wharf at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm. The sailings are free. The noon sailing will also sail past Mokopuna Island, but normal fares apply.
