Tawa war memorial closer

Kapi-Mana News - - NEWS -

A Tawa memorial is out for tender, just as the suburb’s historical society kicks its fundraising up a gear.

A memorial, to be built at the northern end of Oxford St, adjacent to Grasslees Reserve, will probably cost about $90,000.

It will commemorate the 13 men from the area who died in the Boer War and two world wars.

Wellington City Council was fully supportive of the project, Tawa Historical Society chairman Bruce Murray said.

Murray said the society had made minor changes to the design of architect McKenzie Higham.

Murray estimated the project would take six weeks once work began.

The society had about $ 25,000 already locked away, and now grants from different foundations would be applied for.

A casuarina tree would need to be removed and an enclosing wall, seating, extensive paving and landscaping would be carried out by the contractor to create a shaded area perfect for reflection, Murray said.
