Sub­mit­ters get chance to speak

The Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Com­mis­sion hear­ings on the draft pro­posal for re­or­gan­i­sa­tion of coun­cils in the Welling­ton re­gion come to Porirua on Thurs­day.

The hear­ings will start at 9am and be held in the He­len Smith Com­mu­nity Room in Pataka, Nor­rie St.

They are for peo­ple who re­quested to speak to their sub­mis­sion on the draft pro­posal.

Mem­bers of the public can at­tend as ob­servers.

It is not a public fo­rum for dis­cus­sion. The hear­ings are be­fore the three com­mis­sion­ers: Basil Mor­ri­son (chair­man), Anne Carter and Janie An­n­ear.

They are run along the lines of a com­mis­sion of in­quiry. The com­mis­sion­ers may ques­tion sub­mit­ters if they need elab­o­ra­tion on some points. How­ever, one sub­mit­ter can­not cross- ex­am­ine com­mis­sion­ers or an­other sub­mit­ter.

About 500 peo­ple around Welling­ton re­gion asked to be heard and 9400 sub­mis­sions were re­ceived.
