Windfall for Porirua groups
Porirua community groups have had a windfall of nearly $1 million from Mana Community Grants Foundation.
Chairwoman Litea Ah Hoi said it was special to be able to award so much – $ 974,400 – in this round after a year or two of scraping support together.
‘‘ From careful management we have found ourselves in a position with some excess funds,’’ she said.
‘‘ We have been able to get some really exciting community initiatives off the ground, including a covered outdoor stage at Aotea Lagoon, funding Porirua Sundown Rotary Club and a Writer’s Walk in Porirua. It will be made of inscribed granite stone, and will celebrate the best of our poets and writers.’’
Other organisations to benefit include sports clubs, welfare and health agencies.
Carevets Charitable Foundation Trust was awarded $50,000 towards desexing programmes of cats and dogs in Porirua City.
The Porirua Foundation was granted $30,000 towards assisting families in need with school stationery requirements and supporting the Shine Literacy Project, which helps children with learning challenges.
Wesley Wellington Mission was supported in its food co-op initiative, which supplies cheap fruit and vegetables to low-income families.
With the funds approved, Wellington Free Ambulance service is now able to buy two vehicles to assist in emergencies.
Porirua RSA was allocated funding towards an exhibition on Gallipoli at Pataka.
‘‘The range of causes we get to consider is very humbling; it really is an honour to be considering such worthy applications,’’ Ah Hoi said.
Besides Ah Hoi, trustees are Sarah Dow, Eleanor Cater, Tim Sheppard, Henry Smith and John Burke.
The Mana Community Grants Foundation receives its income from gaming machine revenue in five sites around Porirua and Tawa.
The Foundation has a policy that all proceeds go back to the community.
The next grants round closes on Thursday, April 30, with decisions to be made in May.
