Wind­fall for Porirua groups

Porirua com­mu­nity groups have had a wind­fall of nearly $1 mil­lion from Mana Com­mu­nity Grants Foun­da­tion.

Chair­woman Litea Ah Hoi said it was spe­cial to be able to award so much – $ 974,400 – in this round af­ter a year or two of scrap­ing sup­port to­gether.

‘‘ From care­ful man­age­ment we have found our­selves in a po­si­tion with some ex­cess funds,’’ she said.

‘‘ We have been able to get some re­ally ex­cit­ing com­mu­nity ini­tia­tives off the ground, in­clud­ing a cov­ered out­door stage at Aotea La­goon, fund­ing Porirua Sun­down Ro­tary Club and a Writer’s Walk in Porirua. It will be made of in­scribed gran­ite stone, and will cel­e­brate the best of our po­ets and writ­ers.’’

Other or­gan­i­sa­tions to ben­e­fit in­clude sports clubs, wel­fare and health agen­cies.

Carevets Char­i­ta­ble Foun­da­tion Trust was awarded $50,000 to­wards de­sex­ing pro­grammes of cats and dogs in Porirua City.

The Porirua Foun­da­tion was granted $30,000 to­wards as­sist­ing fam­i­lies in need with school sta­tionery re­quire­ments and sup­port­ing the Shine Lit­er­acy Project, which helps chil­dren with learn­ing chal­lenges.

Wes­ley Welling­ton Mission was sup­ported in its food co-op ini­tia­tive, which sup­plies cheap fruit and veg­eta­bles to low-in­come fam­i­lies.

With the funds ap­proved, Welling­ton Free Am­bu­lance ser­vice is now able to buy two ve­hi­cles to as­sist in emer­gen­cies.

Porirua RSA was al­lo­cated fund­ing to­wards an ex­hi­bi­tion on Gal­lipoli at Pataka.

‘‘The range of causes we get to con­sider is very hum­bling; it re­ally is an hon­our to be con­sid­er­ing such wor­thy ap­pli­ca­tions,’’ Ah Hoi said.

Be­sides Ah Hoi, trustees are Sarah Dow, Eleanor Cater, Tim Shep­pard, Henry Smith and John Burke.

The Mana Com­mu­nity Grants Foun­da­tion re­ceives its in­come from gam­ing ma­chine rev­enue in five sites around Porirua and Tawa.

The Foun­da­tion has a pol­icy that all pro­ceeds go back to the com­mu­nity.

The next grants round closes on Thurs­day, April 30, with de­ci­sions to be made in May.
