Hungry driver over limit
The munchies got the better of a Porirua man caught by police driving drunk on his way to McDonald’s.
Nicholas John McLaren, 29, pleaded guilty in Porirua District Court last Tuesday to driving while four times over the legal blood alcohol limit.
The court heard that McLaren drove his mother’s car to McDonald’s in Kenepuru Drive on December 20.
A member of the public called police after concerns that he was driving while intoxicated.
When police stopped McLaren a breath screening test indicated more than 400 micrograms per litre of breath and a blood test showed 206 milligrams of alcohol per millilitres of blood. The legal blood alcohol limit is 50.
McLaren told police he was dropping off his friends after drinking at a local pub and had considered taking the courtesy van home, but changed his mind.
Judge Jan Kelly said it was a very high rating. She convicted and sentenced McLaren to six months’ community detention and six months’ supervision, and ordered him to pay the ambulance fee of $109.25 and other costs of $188.
McLaren was disqualified from driving or holding a licence until further notice. It was his third drink-driving conviction.
