Cadets in Canberra for Anzac Day
Alex Asbery and 14 other cadets from 41 City of Porirua Squadron will this week enjoy the opportunity of a lifetime.
The 15 cadets will celebrate the 100-year centenary of World War I by being part of an Anzac Day commemoration parade in Canberra.
‘‘It’s supposed to be a big parade. I’ve never been on an overseas trip with cadets before, but this is going to be a great experience and a lot of fun,’’ the 20-year-old said last week.
They will be marching in the Anzac Day parade on Saturday alongside counterparts from 49 squadron in Kapiti and 22 squadron in the Hutt Valley. A total of 50 cadets from Wellington will spend this week in Canberra.
‘‘It’s been in the planning for the last two years, for us to do something to mark the 100 years commemoration. The group is really committed and we’re all looking forward to the experience.
‘‘It has been perfectly timed, and even though we will miss the New Zealand services, we will still celebrate Anzac Day.’’
Asbery holds the rank of under officer in his squadron and is a No 2 flight commander.
He has been working hard to organise his squadron and will be excited to see it all come together.
‘‘It’s the experience I’m looking forward to.’’
For as long as Asbery can remember he has had an interest in aviation, and cannot wait to visit the Richmond Air Force Base while in Australia.
Asbery is originally from England, but has spent most of his life in Whitby. He is now flatting in Karori because of university commitments.
The squadron received $1000 from New Zealand Maori Tourism to fund polo shirts and memorial pins for the trip.
The 41 (City of Porirua) Squadron, air training corps has members stretching across Porirua City and Tawa. It offers a varied range of activities in its training programme for people from 13 to 18. That includes firearms safety and target shooting, aviation studies, and drill and service training.
The squadron meets on Monday nights, starting at 6.30pm during the school term in the TS Taupo building, Ngatitoa Domain, Mana.
