Mana sea cadets strike the double
Cadets from Mana’s TS Taupo Sea Cadets showed what they were made of by winning a national regatta at Evans Bay last month.
It was the second recent triumph for the Mana group, who won the annual Sea Cadet Central Area competition in Whanganui earlier this year.
Kieran Clay, Ryan Dawson, Daniel Bernards, Austen Rangi, Matt Ohlsson, Mitchell Dawson, Zak Lahgazi, Verity Isaacs and Vicky Saysell made up the squad, who came away with six trophies at the central area event. They placed first in several events, including first aid, seamanship, supernumerary and shooting. There was also a second placing in sailing.
The Mana cadets’ efforts in the central regional event earned them the chance to compete against the winners of the southern and northern regions.
After a tight start to the competition, TS Taupo pulled away to win for the second successive year.
Saysell, the unit commander, said the results built on recent successes, which included winning the national sea cadet shooting trophy in November.
It also helped the cadets gain credits towards achieving their National Certificates in Cadet Forces, which two cadets received at the end of 2014. Sea Cadets is a member of the New Zealand Cadet Forces family.
‘‘We have a focus on fostering strong leadership skills and providing many opportunities for young people not available in other organisations,’’ Saysell said.
Activities undertaken by TS Taupo within the last year include boating, target shooting, visiting Navy ships and bases, overseas trips, and bushcraft.
TS Taupo Sea Cadets are recruiting now.
