Northern United’s Swindale Shield season is stuttering after they fell 29-26 to Wellington at Porirua Park on Saturday.

The game was over by halftime, as the visitors’ forwards stamped their authority and raced out to a 29-0 lead. Norths roared back, with tries to Dean Brunsdon, Api Naikatini (2) and Siaosi Anamani.

But it wasn’t enough and with just one win from five games the Porirua side is nestled in the bottom half of the table.

Porirua Park was awash with rugby on Saturday as Norths hosted its club fun day. Fans of all ages rugged up in the chilly weather to watch all grades, from premier grade to the under-12s.

Unbeaten Tawa stayed top of the table with a hard-fought 35-29 win over Old Boys- University at Lyndhurst Park. Fifteen points from James So’oialo, including a try, kept them in front. Paremata Plimmerton are second from bottom after their 36-21 loss to Poneke.

In Central League football action, Tawa were accounted for 7- 1 by Napier City Rovers on Sunday and Western Suburbs cemented second in the ladder with a thrilling 5-3 win over Wairarapa United at Endeavour Park on Saturday.

Declan Edge’s young Wests side started strongly. They created a chance in the first minute, a cross from Mikey Faber finding Tinashe Marowa, who made no mistake from in front.

Then two goals in three minutes from Ahmad Mohammadi put Wests 3-0 up before Wairarapa’s Paul Ifill got on the scoresheet. Juan Chang and another goal from the visitors made it 4-2 at the break.

Callum McCowatt scored Wests’ fifth after 58 minutes to make the game safe. Living next to the beach - can you think of anything better? This property is the ultimate in seaside living.
