The not- for- profit employment support offered by Workmates Porirua is being celebrated this year as staff plan for the organisation’s 20th birthday.

Workmates is a charitable trust that provides a free service to those living in the Wellington region. It caters to people with disabilities and barriers to employment and assists them to gain and retain positions in the workplace.

Team manager Cherry Skinner said not everyone knew about Workmates, but those who did received ongoing support once they went to work, and for as long as they wanted or needed.

‘‘People say they can’t get a job, but they can. It’s important because there’s a real need for us and the need is not going anywhere, so neither are we,’’ Skinner said.

Workmates has partnered with organisations such as Work and Income to help people find employment.

She said that just this year more than 30 people had been placed into positions.

The 20-year celebrations will be held in November.
