Red Hackle con­tin­ues to flour­ish

Tawa’s Welling­ton Red Hackle pipe band shone at the na­tional cham­pi­onships at Trafal­gar Park, Nel­son, last month.

The band, in its sec­ond year in grade 3, com­peted in the two mu­sic events to de­cide the win­ning band of the 10 teams en­tered in the grade.

Red Hackle fin­ished run­ner-up to lo­cal team Celtic Pipe and won tro­phies for drum­ming grade 3, and bass and tenor in grades 3, 4A and 4B.

There was an­other grade 3 victory for Red Hackle dur­ing the street march through the main shop­ping streets in Nel­son.

Red Hackle had an ideal buildup to the cham­pi­onships, be­ing grade 3 win­ners at the Welling­tonHawke’s Bay Cen­tre con­test in Feild­ing.

The band prac­tises ev­ery Tues­day evening, led by pipe ma­jor Davey Welsh, drum ma­jor Frank Clark and drum sergeant Ca­t­rina Berry.

The band cur­rently has about 50 mem­bers.

Next year the na­tional cham­pi­onships will be held in Feild­ing.

Red Hackle is look­ing to add a devel­op­ment team in grade 4B.
