Red Hackle continues to flourish
Tawa’s Wellington Red Hackle pipe band shone at the national championships at Trafalgar Park, Nelson, last month.
The band, in its second year in grade 3, competed in the two music events to decide the winning band of the 10 teams entered in the grade.
Red Hackle finished runner-up to local team Celtic Pipe and won trophies for drumming grade 3, and bass and tenor in grades 3, 4A and 4B.
There was another grade 3 victory for Red Hackle during the street march through the main shopping streets in Nelson.
Red Hackle had an ideal buildup to the championships, being grade 3 winners at the WellingtonHawke’s Bay Centre contest in Feilding.
The band practises every Tuesday evening, led by pipe major Davey Welsh, drum major Frank Clark and drum sergeant Catrina Berry.
The band currently has about 50 members.
Next year the national championships will be held in Feilding.
Red Hackle is looking to add a development team in grade 4B.
