Big day for Tawa orchestra
Tawa Community Orchestra is ready for its first concert of 2015.
Though many of its members are keen amateurs, orchestra conductor Andrew Atkins described them as ‘‘a dedicated, talented and community-spirited group of musicians’’.
He said they were loving the challenge and were surprising themselves with the quality of their music-making.
Their concert will be held at St Andrew’s on the Terrace, Wellington, on June 7 from 3pm and will feature a German programme with works by Weber, Mozart and Beethoven.
International pianist Xing Wang will play Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 20.
Wang started playing the piano at 4 and in 2008 was awarded a scholarship to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
‘‘Playing with the Tawa Community Orchestra fits Xing’s musical outreach philosophy perfectly, and the orchestra is excited to have the opportunity to play with a soloist of that calibre,’’ Atkins said.
