Working in Porirua is great for employees’ health and safety judging by the local companies that have been named finalists in the Wellington Gold Awards for industry excellence.

Porirua’s Branz and Sealed Air are finalists in the ACC Workplace Safety award category.

Deputy mayor ‘Ana Coffey said it was great to see two Porirua companies being recognised for excellence in workplace health and safety.

‘‘This is an area of increasing importance for our business community as new legislation to protect workers’ safety goes through Parliament and I’m really pleased to see two Porirua companies leading the way,’’ she said.

Branz is an independent and impartial research, testing, consulting and information company providing services and resources for the building industry.

The company, based in Judgeford, last year initiated a review of its own health and safety practices and implemented changes to ensure they were robust.

Sealed Air, based in Elsdon, manufactures food films and has reduced its injury rate to zero after developing and implementing some robust systems.

Another finalist with links to Porirua is the New Zealand Film and Television School, which is owned by Whitireia New Zealand, based in Porirua.

The school was named a finalist in the Film, Media and Creative Content category

Winners will be announced in July.
