Bet­ter wi-fi on the way for CBD

Public wi-fi will be up and run­ning in Porirua’s city cen­tre be­fore sum­mer, Porirua City Coun­cil con­firmed re­cently.

An eco­nomic devel­op­ment quar­terly re­port to Te Komiti on May 21 said the pro­vi­sion for en­hanced public wi- fi was agreed to by the coun­cil in April and the lay­ing of fi­bre- op­tic ca­ble and in­stal­la­tion of wire­less ac­cess points is un­der way.

The work is ex­pected to take four months and an­other two months will be needed for testing.

Other el­e­ments of the re­port in­cluded the coun­cil de­vel­op­ing a busi­ness and in­vest­ment at­trac­tion pro­gramme to co­in­cide with up­com­ing changes to Cob­ham Court; an en­tre­pre­neur­ial train­ing course to be run in Porirua in con­junc­tion with Porirua Cham­ber of Com­merce and Pa­cific Busi­ness Trust; and the coun­cil work­ing with the Gov­ern­ment to im­prove broad­band avail­abil­ity in eastern Porirua and Ti­tahi Bay.

The re­port also noted that Porirua un­em­ploy­ment was 7.1 per cent, its low­est level for five years.
