‘‘It’s hard to get the tops spin­ning [ow­ing to com­pe­ti­tion tops be­ing larger], but once they start they go,’’ he said.

The Fes­ti­val of Wood­skills will be held at Pataka next month. It is a fam­ily event and Jansen and Smith hope all ages turn up.

Dur­ing the event, chil­dren will have a chance to dec­o­rate their own tops and have a go in the ‘‘spin zone’’.

The Guild of Wood­work­ers Welling­ton has its bi­en­nial Wood­turn­ing Plus Ex­hi­bi­tion and Fes­ti­val of Wood­skills at Pataka on July 11 and 12.
