Awards mark 50th year

Porirua gets set to cel­e­brate its favourite peo­ple

If you know some­one who has made a pos­i­tive dif­fer­ence to Porirua City, you can nom­i­nate them for a new award.

Mayor Nick Leggett said the one-off awards were be­ing made to mark Porirua’s 50th birth­day.

‘‘The 50 Years Awards will cel­e­brate the con­tri­bu­tion 50 living peo­ple have made, and con­tinue to make, to the devel­op­ment of Porirua as a city,’’ Leggett said.

‘‘The awards are for un­sung he­roes who qui­etly get on with mak­ing a dif­fer­ence in Porirua and peo­ple who are well-known in the city, the re­gion, na­tion­ally and in­ter­na­tion­ally for what they have achieved.’’

Win­ners re­ceive a medal de­signed around the Porirua 50th logo.

The awards will be judged by Leggett, deputy-mayor ‘Ana Cof­fey, city coun­cil­lor Litea Ah Hoi, for­mer Porirua may­ors John Burke and Jenny Brash, and Ngati Toa Ran­gatira Kau­matua Taku Parai.

Nom­i­na­tion forms can be picked up from the coun­cil’s front counter in Cob­ham Court, Porirua li­braries, the i-site and Te Rau­paraha Arena.

Nom­i­na­tions close on July 31.
