A group of Porirua College students have reaped the benefit of a partnership between their school and Ignite Sport.

In 2010, the college contacted Ignite Sport for help with year 10s who needed direction.

Though school was not easy for the students, they loved rugby.

From this, the Ontrack Sports Academy was born, with all students successfully completing the first programme.

During the second year of the programme, students learnt about leadership in sport.

In their final year at school, they mentored junior students and in a community leadership role taught Brandon Intermediate pupils a new sport.

Some students were made prefects and one was named as deputy head boy.

Organisers said the future was more positive after the programme with most of the students achieving NCEA level 3 and University Entrance.

For the first time in 24 years, Porirua College’s 1st XV played in the college sport premier grade, and much of the team was made up of students of the Ontrack programme.
