There’s no escaping that shocking sensation when you hit the water, but the hardy among us will relish the feeling.

Plimmerton Kindergarten is hosting the 19th edition of the annual Midwinter Dip on Sunday at Karehana Bay.

This year, money raised will go towards a major renovation of the kindergarten’s bathroom. Coorganiser Mega Krishnan said support from the community and sponsors, including Aardvark, Firth and Harcourts, was hugely appreciated.

‘‘A lot of people don’t realise it’s a fundraiser for the kindy – they just come along to enjoy day, and jump into freezing cold water,’’ she said.

Krishnan said ages of participants will vary, as would the costumes of many who take the plunge. For those content to stay on solid ground, there will be sausages, soup, baking and coffee to consume, and a beach dig and games to take part in.

The event kicks off at 11am and the dip is at noon. Prizes for the best costumes include Interislander travel and theatre vouchers.
