Bud­ding ar­chi­tect earns schol­ar­ship

For­mer Tawa Col­lege stu­dent Tyler Harlen re­ceived a $ 6000 Freema­sons univer­sity schol­ar­ship this month.

Harlen is study­ing for a bach­e­lor of ar­chi­tec­tural stud­ies at Vic­to­ria Univer­sity and hopes to do his mas­ters next year.

As a vol­un­teer in the fac­ulty of ar­chi­tec­ture and de­sign’s Te Ropu Awhina, Harlen helps young Maori and Pa­cific stu­dents who are keen to pur­sue ar­chi­tec­ture and de­sign ca­reers. His Niuean her­itage led to him be­com­ing part of Te Ropu Awhina’s de­sign team for an aged care fa­cil­ity as an ad­di­tion to the hos­pi­tal in Niue.

Cel­e­brat­ing 125 years in New Zealand, Freema­sons gave $192,000 in schol­ar­ships to 28 of the coun­try’s A grade univer­sity stu­dents, in­clud­ing Harlen, at a cer­e­mony held in­side the Christchurch Tran­si­tional Cathe­dral on June 13.
