Nine Canadian nursing students and two tutors have bid farewell after five weeks in New Zealand.

They were from the nursing programme at Camosun College in British Columbia and were hosted by the Whitireia’s faculty of health in Porirua.

They spent time in simulation labs at Whitireia and on clinical placements at healthcare providers around the region.

Canadian tutor Hazell Penn said she was inspired to bring the students to Whitireia after reading about the work of Dr Marga- ret Southwick, who developed two of Whitireia’s nursing degrees.

‘‘We see many parallels between Canada and New Zealand in terms of issues affecting the health system,’’ Penn said.

Whitireia provided the Camosun College students with the full campus experience, welcoming them with a powhiri and issuing them with student IDs.

Camosun College nursing tutor Renate Gibbs said they had begun the groundwork while here that would enable Whitireia students to travel to Canada.
