Dylan’s life in the fast lane
Emerging moto-trials star Dylan Ball is getting used to beating people four times his age. The Judgeford 10-year-old has become a centre of attraction on the national moto-trials scene, often taking on and beating adults.
Moto- trials involves a serious amount of skill, control and balance. Dylan rides a specially designed motorbike over and around the tight, obstacle- filled course.
He said the aim was to get through a section without falling off or putting your foot down, which was sometimes a great challenge.
‘‘It’s totally different to other motorsports as it’s more about balance and control. My dad rides trials and I liked watching him so I gave it a go and loved it. I was 2 when I started,’’ Dylan said.
While progressing from his beginner trials bike, which was electric, to the Beta 125 he is riding now, Dylan has won several junior grades.
He currently leads junior North and South Island competitions.
‘‘Competing is the best part and riding different obstacles helps me improve.’’
Dylan also plays football, but he said his friends at Paremata School thought it was cool that he rode motorbikes. ‘‘They con- gratulate me when I do well.’’
At the moment, the youngster is practising for the Australian championship in August and will compete against riders aged 7 to 12.
Dylan gets his tips from New Zealand’s current trials champion, Jake Whitaker, and said he hoped to one day be a national champion himself.
His mother, Cheryl Anderson, said that she encouraged Dylan because it was something he loved.
‘‘He has great style as well and is always great to watch. He also seems to draw a crowd when he rides because of that,’’ Anderson said.
‘‘Nick [Dylan’s father] has been riding for about 18 years and Dylan has always been quite fascinated. It’s always been something he has wanted to do.
‘‘He does very well and we’re just pushing him towards what he loves doing. We’re really proud of him.’’
Dylan and his father belong to the Ixion Motorcycle Club.
