Porirua’s best contemporary art will be on show at the upcoming Pataka Friends Arts Award exhibition. Artists have just weeks to finalise their entries.

There are enticing prizes on offer, with $1000 for the open award, $750 for the highly commended and $500 for the ever-popular people’s choice.

Pataka Friends committee member Gay Hay said the open winner was a great prize.

The judge has a tough decision to make, but it is always very interesting to see what viewers of the exhibition think when it comes time to casting their vote,’’ she said.

The exhibition, now in its third year, could attract about 50 entries in different mediums. The aim was to give established and emerging artists from the city a platform to show their talent, Hay said.

Last year’s open award winner, Kerry Scott, also took the opportunity to become Pataka’s artist-inresidence for a week, with the fee covered by money coming from the awards entry fees.

‘‘For some, it’s their first opportunity to display their work in one of the country’s most high- profile galleries,’’ Hay said.

‘‘Art that appears in Pataka is sig- nificant and these awards seem to be growing each year.’’

To be eligible, artists must live, work or study in Porirua. All the work is for sale.

The deadline for entries is July 17. The winners will be announced on August 6 and the exhibition of finalists’ work runs from August 7 till September 6, when the people’s choice will be announced.
