Porirua Park’s main seated area has been officially renamed the Jerry Collins Grandstand.

Porirua City councillors unanimously agreed to the name change last week. A dedication will take place next year.

Porirua mayor Nick Leggett said there had been a lot of talk among the public about a way to appropriately recognise the former All Black and Hurricanes player in the city.

‘‘I’ve spoken to his family and they acknowledge that there is strong support for this,’’ he said. ‘‘We can plan a community event next year to recognise it with the Collins family, Ngati Toa and Northern United.’’

Councillor Izzy Ford said a prime time for the dedication would be when Norths have an Old Timers day, probably in June, during the rugby season.

It would be an occasion when Porirua Park was busy and would mark one year since Collins’ death, she said.

The council also agreed to develop a policy for the purpose of naming facilities after individuals.

City councillor Helen Smith, rugby league historian Bernie Wood and youth worker Richard Tautoro have had facilities or places in Porirua named after them, a report to councillors noted. Councillor Ken Douglas noted the need to recognise golfer Michael Campbell.
