The feature on John Seddon (November 17) was a reminder Porirua City Council managers used to live in Porirua. Now, most make recommendations and decisions affecting Porirua ratepayers and residents, with no impact on themselves, because they live in the Hutt Valley, Wellington and Kapiti Coast. It’s easy to make harsh decisions when they have no impact personally.

John mentioned he knew how to balance budgets. Balancing is easy when a council is involved. You cut back on maintenance, borrow money, or increase rates.

The worrying thing for ratepayers today is this council is doing all three, with the future holding massive double figure rates increases if something doesn’t change.

The current generation of children in Porirua, definitely won’t want to be 80 and still living here. They won’t be able to afford to pay their rates.
