Student murals brighten stadium walls

Twelve giant murals are in place on the inner concourse walls of Westpac Stadium thanks to a group of Porirua students.

Secondary schools from around the Wellington region were invited to take part, each working with a professional Wellington artist to create a largescale mural on a canvas affixed to the walls of the Stadium concourse.

Porirua’s contributions came from Mana College and Samuel Marsden Whitby.

The supporting artists were a mixture of high profile and up and coming talent including Kerry Ann Lee, Gabby O’Connor, Jade Townsend, Michel Tuffery, Sheyne Tuffery and Wayne Youle.

Each school took part in a creative workshop with their artist to develop their design concepts and then spent a day on site at the stadium putting their designs on to canvas.

Westpac Stadium, in conjunction with the Wellington, Porirua and Hutt City councils, designed the project to mark two significant milestones – the 150th anniversary of Wellington and 15th birthday of Westpac Stadium.

Students and artists celebrated the completion of the project with a special opening event at the stadium on December 16. The artworks will be on display at all events until the middle of 2016.
