Big turnout at Titahi Bay tennis event
Titahi Bay Tennis Club’s first Anniversary Weekend doubles tournament in 18 years was a success, with more than 100 participants gracing the courts over two days.
Organiser Brodie Sadgrove said the ages of players in the event ranged from 10 to 70, and more than 20 clubs were represented.
‘‘The sun was out and everyone enjoyed the atmosphere and hospitality that we’re known for,’’ he said. ‘‘A number of our club members put their hands up to promote, organise and run the tournament and it was great to see it all come together.’’
For the record, the men’s event was won by Tony Dorman and Lance Wilkins, the women’s by Mareta Randall and Belinda Jane, and Martin Kelly and Margaret Young won the mixed doubles.
Dorman and Wilkins were presented the Johnny Rarere Memorial Cup, which was contested between 1987 and 1998, before the doubles tournament ceased.
Sadgrove said sponsorship from Thump Sports and Cottier Wines meant players were able to have their entry fees halved. Planning was under way already for the 2017 tournament, part of the club’s 90th birthday celebrations.
