We hope you’re enjoying our series profiling those distinguished Porirua citizens who won 50th medals at the city’s jubilee birthday last year.

The stories have provoked good reader feedback and have given us the chance to profile a volunteer firefighter, school principals, a Maori elder, community volunteers and many others.

We were sad that one man we were lining up to profile, noted boxing trainer Chris Kenny, died last week. His death has provoked a huge outpouring of admiration on Facebook. Read our profile of this notable Porirua identity on page 4.

This week our 50th medal profile is musician Bill Platt. What a tremendous contribution he has made to music, and especially in his specialised area of brass bands, over six decades. It turned out to be a good decision for him when as a youngster he chose to specialise in the euphonium, rather than pursue rugby. His story is on page 8.
