Com­mu­nity ser­vices recog­nised

Lloyd Martin has given years of his life to help­ing men­tor the next gen­er­a­tion of youth lead­ers.

The Ti­tahi Bay man was recog­nised with a Ki­wibank Lo­cal Hero Award late last year.

‘‘It was a bit of a sur­prise. My work in the com­mu­nity is not about get­ting recog­ni­tion, but I’m very grate­ful,’’ Martin said.

Martin founded Praxis, a sup­port net­work for peo­ple who con­trib­ute to the de­vel­op­ment of young peo­ple in their com­mu­ni­ties.

He is also heav­ily in­volved in Porirua Al­ter­na­tive School in Can­nons Creek.

‘‘It’s great to have an op­por­tu­nity to work with peo­ple, and to be in a job you love do­ing.’’

Martin has spent his life in­volved in teach­ing, start­ing off teach­ing at Windley School and Bran­don In­ter­me­di­ate in the 1970s.

"I fell in love with the com­mu­nity and just never left."
