Plimmerton artist excited about upcoming exhibition
Fran Zukowski has been painting for only five years, but don’t let that fool you— she’s good.
The Plimmerton painter has been working on several works for her lineup, which will be on show at the inaugural Mana Arts Society summer exhibition.
The exhibition opens this week.
Zukowski, originally from South Africa, has exhibited paintings around Wellington since she moved to New Zealand three years ago, but said she was looking forward to showcasing her work in her own community.
‘‘I will be one of about 30 artists, which means there could be more than 70 paintings on display. It’s going to be a little bit different to other exhibitions because its local, but it will be nice. I’m excited,’’ she said.
Zukowski started painting while she was living in Melbourne and was inspired by the numerous galleries she visited there.
‘‘My whole family is arty and were always doing creative things. I suppose I just caught the bug.’’
Painting is Zukowski’s fulltime occupation. Previously she worked as a personal assistant.
‘‘I love that I have this opportunity to paint.’’
She uses oil paints that are water mixable.
‘‘I just start painting. I rarely have an idea. Usually I start off doing one thing and it ends up as something completely different. It’s quite fun.’’
Zukowski has three paintings in the upcoming exhibition, which will be held at the Mana Arts Society clubrooms at Plimmerton Domain. It runs on February 13 and 14, and February 20 and 21.
Exhibition co-ordinator Jill Sutton said there would be a range of art using different mediums.
‘‘It’s a real mix,’’ she said. ‘‘There will be some traditional paintings and some more abstract than others.
‘‘Another thing is that everyone is from the Porirua region and are all members of the Mana Arts Society.’’ To view some of Zukowski’s work, go to facebook.com/ franbonesart.
