Walking group growing

Don Quirk is pleased a Whitby walking group he started in 2015 has continued to help the community get out and about.

The Sunday walking group started with just a few walkers, but has grown to 20 members, with between eight and 15 turning up each week.

It was not only the walking that appealed, but the friendships that resulted, Quirk said.

‘‘Many stay after the walks and happily chat over a coffee,’’ he said.

The walking group has extended over the past year, with every second week showcasing a new route.

The routes are outside Whitby, but no more than 15 minutes away via car.

He said that ensured the walks had variety as well as not taking up too much of Sunday’s valuable family time.

Quirk said though some members chose to walk the organised walkways, others could walk the more simple routes.

‘‘Most walks are organised for an hour’s duration, 30 minutes in and 30 minutes back. [There is] no problem if members wish to continue over the hour.’’ The next walk will be on April 10 around Endeavour Park. Those interested in joining the walking group should meet at the Whitby shops at 9am. For information, contact 04 234 7700 or 027 2606306.
