Norths and Tawa make their mark

North­ern United and Tawa are in the top half of the Swin­dale Shield ta­ble af­ter im­pres­sive vic­to­ries in Welling­ton club rugby on Satur­day.

In the derby round, Norths thrashed John­sonville 66-0 at Hel­ston Park. Winger Manu Lafaele scored three tries and the com­pe­ti­tion’s lead­ing points scorer, Perry Hay­man, notched 26 points.

Neigh­bours Tawa out­classed Hutt Old Boys Marist 47-15 at Lyn­d­hurst Park. Tawa sec­ond-five Vili Daku­ni­mata dot­ted down twice.

Pare­mata Plim­mer­ton were beaten 55-5 by Poneke, con­ced­ing seven tries in the first half.

The re­sults leave Norths fourth in the ta­ble and Tawa seventh. Pare­mata Plim­mer­ton are sec­ond­bot­tom, above John­sonville.

In Cen­tral League foot­ball, Wests led against Olympic at Wake­field Park through a Ben Sip­pola penalty. But two sec­ond half goals gave Olympic the win, plac­ing Wests eighth af­ter three rounds.

In premier rugby league, Pe­tone, who had not won at this level since 2013, thrashed Porirua Vik­ings 38-18 at McEwan Park on Satur­day.

Judge­ford had an­other ex­cel­lent win in divi­sion one in­ter­club golf, beat­ing Mi­ra­mar at Para­pa­raumu on Satur­day.

They led 41⁄ af­ter the morn­ing four­somes and then won four of 10 sin­gles matches.

The re­sult leaves Judge­ford fifth, but they have played one less round than some teams due to rain on April 2.
