Many people would vouch for the importance of Poly Palace, the drop-off for polystyrene, glass and other recyclable material.

It is handily sited next to Trash Palace and Richie Moore, who runs it, has done a wonderful job. He estimates his recycling business saves Porirua City Council about $60,000 a year by keeping polystyrene out of the landfill.

Moore gets funding from the council and this is topped up by the underfloor insulation part of the business. Since Poly Palace began in 2004, the partnership with the council has been a mutually beneficial one.

Now, as you can read on page 9, Moore fears he may have to close Poly Palace.

His negotiations with the council over health and safety issues and the number of days he has to be open have become so heated that they are in the hands of lawyers.

Fingers crossed these problems can be sorted out.
