Netball boost for Puleiata
Ainsleyana Puleiata has some tough decisions to make.
The talented Porirua 15-yearold was recently named in the New Zealand secondary schools netball team to play South Africa and Australia next month.
‘‘It was my first time trialling, so I didn’t really put big expectations on myself – I was just excited to get out there,’’ she said.
‘‘It was really exciting to get the call [that she’d made the squad].’’
Puleiata, who attends St Mary’s College, loves playing basketball, volleyball and rugby, so her nonacademic timetable is full. Some difficult choices had to be made, such as not playing basketball.
Netball has developed into an important sport in her life, and she loves working as a wing defence or centre, saying being aggressive on defence is fun.
She said it was a huge thrill to represent her country.
‘‘I’m so happy because my family and others have always supported me and I’m working hard and paying them back.
‘‘With secondary schools I’m playing with new people and pushing myself. It’s a huge experience for me.’’
Puleiata hoped to have a big winter with her school side.
‘‘We’re hoping to dominate this year in quite a few sports,’’ she said.
