Selfless act at beach wins guard lifesaving award
Titahi Bay lifeguard Alexandra Jones has won the Surf Life Saving New Zealand central region award for rescue of the month.
On the afternoon of March 19 during the 2016 national surf lifesaving championships at Ohope Beach, Jones stopped mid-race to assist a fellow competitor in distress.
She was racing in the under16 diamond race and while heading out on the swim leg, noticed one of the girls ahead of her had stopped in the water.
She was crying and taking on water, so Jones supported her in the water and called for the rescue crew in one of the Inflatable Rescue Boats.
They pulled her out of the water and took her to shore.
Jones continued on to finish the race and back on shore was praised for selfless act.
The Titahi Bay club receives a $100 gift card from BP as the prize.
